In Indre By District
Indre By district is the historic center of Copenhagen.
With its numerous alleys and historic buildings, it’s the most famous and touristic neighborhood in the Danish capital.
Here you’ll find Copenhagen’s main landmarks, as well as a numerous shops and restaurants.
In my opinion, Indre By is simply the best district to stay in Copenhagen!
I recommend this district for your stay in Copenhagen:
- Because it’s the best starting point to explore the city on foot
- To be close to all the must-see sights
- For shopping.
The district is the perfect location to discover:
- Tivoli Gardens: a charming old-fashioned amusement park. It’s one of the oldest in the world.
- Nyhavn Canal, lined with colourful houses and restaurants with waterside terraces
- Amalienborg: the Danish Royal family’s winter residence, consisting of 4 Rococo-style palaces. You can visit some of the rooms and learn about the history of the Danish monarchy in the museum.
- Rosenborg Castle: built in the 17th century, it houses the Crown Jewels
- The Little Mermaid: this famous statue has become the emblem of the city
- Stroget, Copenhagen’s main pedestrian and shopping street.
- The Round Tower offering an excellent view over the whole city
- The National Museum of Denmark, to leanr more about the history and culture of the country
- Copenhagen City Hall and its astronomical clock
- Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish Parliament
- SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark and its impressive art collection

- NH Collection Copenhagen: Luxurious hotel located in front of the Royal Library in Copenhagen, enjoy a modern room from 240€ per night, breakfast 30€. Strong points: rich and varied breakfast, great room overlooking the river, quality service.

In Vesterbro District
Vesterbro is located to the South-West of the historic center.
Formerly an industrial area, it’s now a trendy spot, particularly known as the best district to stay in Copenhagen to party!
With its numerous bars, clubs and restaurants, it’s the perfect place to go out in the evening, or even all night long.
And during the day, you can explore its art galleries and vintage boutiques.
You’ll love this district:
- If you’re looking for a very lively and festive area
- For a friends’ trip to Copenhagen.
Here are the best places to visit in Vesterbro district:
- The Carlsberg Brewery, where you can learn about the history of the famous beer brand and, of course, enjoy a tasting!
- Cisternerne: a former underground reservoir turned into an exhibition space
- Meat Packing District: the former slaughterhouse district now hosts plenty of restaurants and pubs
- Copenhagen Zoo, where you can see polar bears, among other animals.

Norrebro and Osterbro are both located to the West of the historic center.
These are rather pleasant districts to stay in Copenhagen, as they are quieter and more residential.
You can experience local life while being just a few minutes from the center by metro or on foot.
They are a good choice for accommodation in Copenhagen for a family trip.
In Norrebro and Osterbro, you shouldn’t miss:
- Fælledparken, the largest park in the city
- The cemetery of Assistens Kirkegård, where you’ll find the grave of Hans Christian Andersen, the famous author of fairy tales like “The Little Mermaid” and “The Ugly Duckling”
- Jaegersborggade, for its independent shops
- Blågårdsgade, and its cozy eateries serving a variety of world cuisines.
The best places to stay in the Norrebro / Osterbro districts
- Comwell Copenhagen Portside Dolce by Wyndham: Located a 15-minute walk from Airtrix Trampolinpark, perfect for kids. Comfortable rooms from 130€ per night, breakfast at 26€. Strong points: new and neat facilities, close to subway, quiet area, good breakfast – The perfect place to stay in Osterbro for a reasonable price!
- Rye115 Hotel: Charming hotel right across the street from the Fælledparken. Comfortable rooms from 140€ per night (shared bathroom) breakfast 13€. Strong points: well connected to the center, warm welcome, very clean, common library.
- Charlottehaven: Located 10 minutes by bike from the center. Spacious fully equipped apartments with balcony from 310€ per night, breakfast 26€. Strong points: pool + sauna, beautiful views, centrally located, good amenities, bike rental. This is my recommendation for a high-end stay in Copenhagen!
- Audo Copenhagen: Luxurious hotel with a minimalist style located next to the Metro. Enjoy its delicate double rooms from 330€ per night. Strong points: hypoallergenic bedding, bike rentals, nice neighborhood, excellent staff service.
- THE KRANE: This unconventional luxury hotel is located in what used to be a harbor crane in Nordhavn. Pamper yourself with harbor views in spacious industrial-style rooms from 1,020€ per night, continental breakfast included. Strong points: private parking and free bike loan, airport transfers, sauna. For sure the most exclusive accommodation in Copenhagen!
Where to Stay in Copenhagen on a Budget
If you’re on a tighter budget, here’s a selection of affordable hotels in Copenhagen:
- Next House Copenhagen: Located 10 minutes walk from Tivoli Gardens. Bed in shared dormitory from 25€ per night, breakfast 9€. Strong points: shared kitchen, views from the terrace, good common areas, comfortable and youthful atmosphere.
- Steel House Copenhagen: Located a few blocks from City Hall. Bed in shared room from 25€ per night. Strong points: pool, close to train and several parks, movie theater, good bar.
- CityHub Copenhagen: Hostel located 20 minutes walk from Cisternerne. Double room pod type from 60€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: clean and well stocked bathrooms, nice common areas, shared kitchen, sauna. Excellent for a cheap night in Copenhagen. Excellent value for money!
- Go Hotel Ansgar: Located a few minutes from Tivoli Gardens and the train station. Double room from 120€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: neighborhood with stores, rich breakfast, newly renovated, also offers family rooms. The best hotel for a budget stay in Copenhagen!

- Wakeup Copenhagen – Borgergade: Located a few streets away from the Guinness World Records Museum. Family room from 200€ per night, breakfast 13€. Strong points: good location, full breakfast, clean and comfortable. Perfect for a family stay in Copenhagen without breaking the bank
- CPH Hotel: Located near the city train station. Scandinavian style family room from 240€ per night including breakfast. Strong points: heated pool, clean and comfortable, free hot drinks, friendly staff.
- Best Western Hotel Hebron: Located a few steps from the Tivoli Gardens. Room with double bed and sofa bed from 300€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: well connected, rich breakfast, friendly staff, nice facilities.
- Apēron Apartment Hotel: Located 600 meters from Rosenborg Castle. Spacious, well-equipped apartment from 330€ per night. Strong points: very quiet, excellent location in the city center, very comfortable.
What is the Best Hotel in Copenhagen?
If you’re looking for the best hotel in Copenhagen, I can only recommend you Villa Copenhagen. However, if you are looking for something absolutely unique, you can book at THE KRANE.
And if you want something a bit more affordable but still excellent, you should book a night or more at Audo Copenhagen, for cozy luxury or at NH Collection Copenhagen, for its wonderful view over the canal.
