To stay in the heart of Brussels and be close to all main landmarks and museums, the historic center is the ideal location.
With its cobbled streets, beautiful squares, and typical cafés, you’ll instantly be immersed in Belgian history and culture.
For me, the historic center is the iconic district to stay in Brussels!
I recommend this district for your stay in Brussels:
- To be near all the main places of interest to see.
- For its historic and lively atmosphere
- For its vibrant nightlife with numerous craft beer bars and varied restaurants.
In Brussels Historic Center, you can discover:
- Grand Place: a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by splendid Gothic-style buildings
- The Town Hall, located on the Grand Place and open for visits
- The King’s House, home to the Brussels City Museum
- Manneken Pis: the famous statue of the little boy peeing in the fountain
- Rue Neuve, the city’s main shopping street
- Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert,to admire the glass roof and go shopping
- Saint Michael and Gudula Cathedral, renowned for its stained-glass windows
- Wolf Sharing Food Market, a large covered market with microbreweries and street food
- Comic Art Museum, focusing on the history of belgian comics
- Banksy Museum
- Royal Palace of Brussels, only open in summer but you can admire its exterior facade year-round
- Brussels Park, for a leisurely stroll.
The Most Beautiful Hotels in Brussels’ Old Town
- Motel One Brussels: Located a 10-minute walk from the Grand Place. Modern and comfortable double rooms start at 130€, breakfast at 17€. Strong points: excellent location, great bedding, varied breakfast. A great choice in Brussels for its excellent value for money.
- Hotel Hubert Grand Place: Situated between the Grand Place and the cathedral. Cozy and romantic double rooms starting at 150€. Strong points: perfect location, very comfortable bedding, lounge area in the lobby with complimentary coffee and tea. Another excellent choice in Brussels’ historic center!
- NH Collection Brussels Centre: Located next to the Banksy Museum. Bright and spacious double rooms from 195€, breakfast at 25€. Strong points: generous breakfast, helpful staff, rooftop with views over Brussels’ rooftops.
- Radisson Collection Grand Place Brussels: A 5-star hotel just a 5-minute walk from the Town Hall. It offers elegant and contemporary rooms from 210€, breakfast at 32€. Strong points: central location, good restaurant, warm atmosphere. Perfect for a romantic stay in Brussels!
- Rocco Forte Hotel Amigo: This luxury hotel is housed in a beautiful historic building, just steps from the Grand Place. Stay in spacious suites starting at 350€, breakfast at 45€. Strong points: highly attentive staff, extreme comfort, tranquility. My favorite for a luxury stay in Brussels’ city center!
In Marolles District and Sablon District
These 2 districts are located just South of Brussels’ historic center.
Marolles district is known for its bohemian vibe and its eclectic mix of vintage shops and artisanal workshops.
Sablon district is slightly more upscale, but still maintains an artistic atmosphere with art galleries and antique shops.
For me, these are two very pleasant areas to stay in Brussels!
You’ll love these districts:
- For their authenticity
- For their friendly and relaxed atmosphere
- For the gastronomy, as you will find numerous renowned restaurants there
- Because they are right next to the Historic Center (easily accessible on foot).
In Marolles and Sablon districts, you shouldn’t miss:
- The Jeu de Balle flea market, held every morning from 9 AM to 12 PM on the place of the same name
- The Palace of Justice: an immense building that remains the largest courthouse in the world (it’s bigger than St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome!)
- Place Polaert, the largest square in the city. It houses a ferris wheel offering a lovely view.
- Notre-Dame du Sablon Church, dating back to the 15th century
- The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium with its collection of over 20,000 works of art
- Halle Gate, whose ramparts offer a panoramic view over the city.
Here are my favorite hotels South of the historic center
- Hotel Chambord: Located 5 minutes walking distance from the church. Double room starts at 120€, breakfast included. Strong points: helpful staff, location, nearby metro.
- 9Hotel Sablon: Located next to the Royal Museums. Chic and minimalist double room from 180€, breakfast at 23€. Strong points: indoor heated pool, comfort, sauna. A great choice for accommodation in Brussels.
- NH Collection Brussels Grand Sablon: Next to the Notre-Dame du Sablon Church and 600 meters from Grand-Place. Spacious and bright double room from 190€, breakfast at 25€. Strong points: very comfortable, full breakfast with lots of options, close to museums. It’s my recommendation for a luxury stay near Brussels’ historic center.
- The Hotel Brussels: Located next to the Palace of Justice. Double room with stylish decor and a nice city view from 250€, breakfast at 32€. Strong points: the spa with panoramic views, attentive staff, parking, excellent breakfast. The ideal hotel for a romantic getaway in Brussels’ South!
In the European Quarter
The European Quarter is located East of the historic center, close to the Royal Palace of Brussels.
This district is much more contemporary than the previous ones and has a cosmopolitan vibe.
It’s a good choice for your stay in Brussels if you want to be away from the bustle of the center, while still being able to get everywhere easily on foot or using public transportation.
The European Quarter is perfect to discover:
- Park Cinquantenaire, a very beautiful, well-maintained park known for its arches
- The Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History, featuring a collection of weapons and uniforms
- Autoworld: a museum dedicated to automobiles, with a collection of 250 cars
- The European Parliament, which can be visited
- The Parlamentarium, where you can learn more about the creation of the European Union
- The House of European History, focusing on the development of Europe. Free and very well done!
- Parc Léopold
- The Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, which is actually the natural history museum. Very educational and interactive.
Where to Stay in the European District, Brussels
- Thon Hotel EU: Located in the heart of the European district. Contemporary double room with large windows from 170€, breakfast 38€. Strong points: the calm, excellent staff, private parking.
- Radisson RED Brussels: Situated next to the Natural History Museum. Artistic double room with wall frescoes from 170€, breakfast 26€. Strong points: unique decoration, room size, excellent breakfast.
- Stanhope Hotel by Thon Hotels: Luxury hotel perfectly located at the start of the European district. Offers classic yet comfortable and warm rooms from 230€, breakfast 39€. Strong points: quality of service, excellent restaurant, delicious breakfast. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in the European district of Brussels!
Where to Stay in Brussels on a Budget
If you’re on a tighter budget, here’s a selection of affordable hotels in Brussels:
- LATROUPE Grand Place Hostel: Youth hostel located in the historic center. Dorm bed from 35€, breakfast 11€. Strong points: location, cleanliness, great atmosphere. An excellent choice for a budget stay in Brussels!
- Sleep Well Youth Hostel: Youth hostel on the edge of the historic center. Dorm bed from 40€, breakfast included. Strong points: welcome, cleanliness, hearty breakfast.
- Bedford Hotel & Congress Centre Brussels: Located in the historic center. Double room from 70€, breakfast 12€. Strong points: perfect for visiting Brussels, efficient staff, comfortable. The best option for a stay in central Brussels without breaking the bank!
Staying in Brussels with Family
- YOOMA Urban Lodge: Located 15 minutes walk from the historic center. Family room for 4 with a comic book hero theme, from 170€, breakfast 17€. Strong points: play area with free arcade room, sauna and hammam, very nice decor. I highly recommend this hotel for a family stay in Brussels.
- Urban Yard Hotel: Positioned next to Marolles district. Room for 3 or 4 from 200€, breakfast 16€. Strong points: room decor, excellent bedding, very friendly staff.
- Aparthotel Adagio Brussels Grand Place: Located in the historic center. Spacious apartment for 4 with fully equipped kitchen from 220€, breakfast 19€. Strong points: great location, pleasant reception, well equipped.
- Hotel Novotel Brussels Off Grand Place: Also situated in the center of Brussels. Spacious and bright room with a double bed and 2 sofa beds, from 350€, breakfast 26€. Strong points: prime location, comfort, quality breakfast. It’s one of the best places to stay in Brussels with family!
