Malaga Historic Center
Malaga’s historic center is without a doubt the best neighborhood for a first time stay.
Also known as El Centro, this district is home to the city’s main tourist attractions.
With its cobbled streets, lively squares, and charming historic buildings, the city center offers an authentic and vibrant atmosphere. You can easily explore numerous monuments and cultural sites on foot.
The area is also particularly lively, with a great choice of tapas bars, restaurants, and shops.
The nightlife is very dynamic here, making it a perfect choice if you’re looking to enjoy festive evenings!
You should choose this district to stay in Malaga if:
- It’s your first time visiting Malaga and you want to be close to the main sights
- You love historic architecture and the authentic charm of old towns more than modern neighborhoods
- You enjoy a vibrant atmosphere
- You want to enjoy Malaga’s nightlife.
This area is ideal to explore:
- Malaga Cathedral, a beautiful religious building mixing Gothic and Renaissance styles
- The Alcazaba, an impressive Moorish fortress dating back to the 11th century
- Picasso Museum Malaga, home to a major collection from the famous painter born in Malaga
- Atarazanas Market, traditional covered market ideal to taste local products
- Gibralfaro Castle, offering an outstanding panoramic view over the entire city

- Soho Boutique Equitativa: Located in the center, next to the market. Charming and tastefully decorated double rooms from 180€, breakfast at 17€. Strong points: outdoor pool, beautiful views, exceptional bedding.
- Vincci Larios Diez: Located in the heart of the district, 200 meters from Plaza de la Constitución. Modern and cozy double rooms with large windows, from 295€, breakfast at 21€. Strong points: rooftop bar/restaurant with outstanding cathedral views, beautiful decor, friendly staff.
- Vincci Selección Posada del Patio: This 5* hotel is located 500 meters from the cathedral. Romantic/bohemian-styled rooms from 300€, breakfast at 27€. Strong points: rooftop pool, beautiful design, attentive staff. The perfect choice for a romantic getaway in Malaga historic center!
- Only YOU Hotel Málaga: This luxury hotel is located at the end of the main shopping street. Warmly decorated rooms with sleek design from 320€, breakfast at 27€. Strong points: rooftop infinity pool and amazing views, wonderful breakfast, highly attentive staff. Simply the best hotel for a luxury stay in Malaga!

Near Malagueta Beach
Malagueta neighbourhood is located between the historic center and the sea.
This district is famous for its beautiful, urban sandy beach, stretching for over 1 km.
Bordered by a lively seaside promenade, Malagueta Beach can be easily reached by foot from the city center.
There, you’ll find lots of seafood restaurants, chiringuitos (beach bars) and great hotels offering splendid views over the Mediterranean sea.
You should stay in La Malagueta:
- If you want to enjoy the fresh sea air while staying close to the historic center
- If you visit in Summer and plan to spend time on the beach
- If you’re travelling with your family, as kids will enjoy having the beach and playgrounds nearby
- If you want to admire beautiful sunsets over the Mediterranean.
The neighbourhood is perfect to visit:
- Malagueta beach and its fine sand
- Centre Pompidou Malaga, a branch of the famous Parisian museum, easy to spot thanks to its colourful cube
- Muelle Uno, a modern shopping area by the harbour with shops and restaurants
- Malaga Park, a Mediterranean garden, home to a wide variety of tropical plants
- Plaza de Toros de la Malagueta, historical hexagonal-shaped bullring
- The seaside promenade, perfect for a walk in the evening.
Here are my favourite hotels near the beach in Malaga
- Hotel Eliseos: Located right across from the bullring and only 300 meters from the beach. Double room from 140€, breakfast at 7€. Strong points: close to the center and beach, friendly staff, parking.
- Soho Boutique Las Vegas: Located on the seafront. Bright and spacious double rooms with balcony from 190€, breakfast at 14€. Strong points: swimming pool, direct beach access, great sea views.
- Parador de Málaga Gibralfaro: Located on a hill overlooking the beach (1 km away). Double room with splendid sea and city views from 230€, breakfast at 21€. Strong points: rooftop swimming pool, charming ambiance, quiet location, delicious breakfast. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Malaga!
- Gran Hotel Miramar GL: This 5-star hotel is located just 50 meters from the beach and offers lovely, elegant rooms with sea views from 290€, breakfast at 30€. Strong points: the pool area and Spa with jacuzzi + sauna, high-quality service, fantastic breakfast served in a beautiful setting. A superb hotel if you’re looking for a beachfront stay in Malaga!

In Churriana district (near the airport)
Churriana district is located about 8 km from Malaga city center and right next to Malaga airport.
If you have an early morning or late evening flight and prefer staying close to the airport, this is your best option.
You can take advantage of your stay to visit Plaza Mayor, a huge outdoor shopping center, or discover the Malaga Airport Museum, covering the history of aviation in the region.

- Holiday Inn Express Malaga Airport by IHG: Located just outside the airport. Comfortable and practical double rooms from 90€, breakfast included. Strong points: free parking, breakfast starting at 4 AM, proximity to the airport.
- Hotel Malaga Picasso: Located 5 minutes away from the airport. Cosy double rooms from 115€, breakfast at 13€. Strong points: large swimming pool + jacuzzi, comfort, relaxing atmosphere.
- Sol Guadalmar: Located just 3 km from the airport, right on the beachfront. Rooms with balcony and sea views from 160€, breakfast included. Strong points: direct beach access, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, excellent breakfast.

If you’re looking for budget accommodations, here are my recommendations of the best affordable hotels in Malaga:
- TOC Hostel Malaga: Youth hostel centrally located. Modern dorm beds from 50€, breakfast at 10€. Strong points: great staff, excellent location, shared kitchen. A very good choice if you’re looking for a budget stay in Malaga.
- Coeo Pod Hostel Beatas: Youth hostel in the historic center. Capsule beds with shared bathroom from 60€, breakfast at 8€. Strong points: perfect location, cleanliness, friendly atmosphere.
- La Casa Mata Central: Located 5 minutes walk from the historic center. Bright and colorful double room with shared bathroom from 65€. Strong points: clean and welcoming, friendly staff, great location.

Where to stay in Malaga with family
- Debambu Atarazanas: Located in the historic center. Modern studio and apartments accommodating up to 6 guests from 150€. Strong points: lovely staff, excellent location, very quiet. An excellent choice for a family stay in Malaga.
- Petit Palace Plaza Málaga: Located in the pedestrian zone, right in the city center. Spacious and modern quadruple rooms from 215€, breakfast included. Strong points: excellent breakfast, perfect location to explore the city on foot, peaceful environment.
- ICON Malabar: Also located right in the center, offering rooms for 4 people (double bed plus bunk beds) from 260€, breakfast at 20€. Strong points: beautiful decorations, lovely hotel, super friendly staff. Perfect for a high-end family stay in Malaga!
