As an iconic symbol of New York, the Empire State Building is a must-visit.
Standing at a height of 443m, this Art Deco skyscraper offers an unparalleled view of the city.
You can visit the observatories on the 86th and 102nd floors, offering 360-degree views of the New York skyline.
The best time to visit the Empire State building is at sunset when you can watch the city transition from day to night, but be prepared for longer waiting times!
In any case, you can expect to wait between one and 2 hours before getting your ticket.
But hopefully, you can avoid that!

So, which one should you get?
It’s very simple:
- If you have only 1 day in New York, get the New York Go City Go Explorer Pass and choose the 3 or 4 attractions version. It will be the cheapest!
- If you’re staying 2 days in New York or simply don’t want to do more than 5 visits, get the New York City Pass. It offers the best bang for your bucks, and unless you plan to run from a tourist attractions to another, 5 activities are enough for 2 days. (Don’t forget there is also plenty of free places to visit in New York!)
- If you’re visiting NYC for 3 days or more, get the New York Go City Go Explorer Pass and choose the number of activities you want to do.
To make it easier for you, every time I will talk about a tourist attraction in this article, I will mention if it’s included in one of the City Passes.

2. Statue of Liberty
If you’re going on your first trip to New York, you will for sure want to visit the Statue of Liberty.
Standing on Liberty Island, this colossal neoclassical sculpture is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.
The statue can be seen from many points in the city, but to fully appreciate it, you should take a ferry to Liberty Island.
The ticket also includes access to Ellis Island and its Immigration Museum.

And if you want to get as close to the statue as possible but don’t have time to visit the island, you should book the one-hour cruise around Liberty Island and Ellis Island.

The New York City Pass and the New York Explorer Pass both includes round trip ferry ticket for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
A free alternative to see the Statue of Liberty is the Staten Island Ferry. Although it doesn’t stop at Liberty Island, it offers a good view of the statue and the Manhattan skyline.
Be careful, the access to the statue’s crown requires a special ticket and can only be booked 3 or 4 months in advance on the official website.
3. National 9/11 Memorial & Museum
The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum is a poignant tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
The outdoor memorial features two reflecting pools, known as the largest manmade waterfalls in North America, standing in the footprint of the Twin Towers.
You should also take the time to visit the museum, which provides a deep insight into the events of that day.

6. Times Square
Let’s now talk about Times Square, another iconic New York landmark, best known for its bright, flashing advertisements.
As you step into Times Square, prepare to be surrounded by a flurry of lights, sounds, and excitement. The towering billboards, bustling streets, and animated characters make it a truly unique experience.
And don’t forget to take a photo with the famous “Times Square” sign!
As you imagine, Times Square is also a shopper’s paradise, with numerous flagship stores, brand boutiques, and souvenir shops. From famous retailers like the Toys “R” Us to the multi-level M&M’s World, there are plenty of options to satisfy your shopping cravings.
You should definitely see it at night when it truly comes alive. While it can be quite crowded, it’s probably THE New York experience that you shouldn’t miss!
Just around the corner, you’ll find the Broadway theater district. Why not catch a show while you’re in the area?
For a great view over Times Square, you should go on the terrace of the Marriott Times Square hotel.

Remember, many speakeasies have limited seating and require reservations or have strict entrance policies. It’s always a good idea to check their websites or make reservations in advance.

These pizzas are famous for their thin crusts and big, foldable slices. You can find authentic New York pizza in pizzerias all over the city.
I admit that I am personally a big fan of Neapolitan Pizza, and eating New York Style Pizza in NYC didn’t make me change my opinion: the Italian version is better 😎
However, you should try your New York Style Pizza in one of the best eateries to make up your own mind:

For the following days, you should visit New York surroundings!
You can, for example, visit Niagara Falls, Boston, Washington or Philadelphia.

As you probably know, hotels are quite expensive in New York, and the hotels offering the best value for money are fully booked very quickly.
To get the best rate, you should really book your accommodation in New York as soon as you have your travel dates!
Here is my selection of the best hotels to stay in the heart of New York (around Times Square / Empire State Building / Central Park).
- HI New York City Hostel: Youth hostel located right next to Central Park. Dormitory beds from €50 per night. An excellent choice for cheap accommodation in New York City Center!
- Club Wyndham Midtown 45: Located next to Grand Central Station. Bright and spacious double room from €200 per night. Strong Points: the rooftop and the location.
- Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott New York Manhattan/Times Square South: Located 1 km from Times Square. Cosy, comfortable double rooms from €330 per night, including breakfast. Strong points: friendly staff, view, peace and quiet.
- Hyatt Place New York City/Times Square: Located next to Madame Tussauds. Double room with impeccable cleanliness and comfortable bedding from €350, breakfast included. Strong points: central location for visiting New York on foot, very generous breakfast, very friendly staff.
- The Iroquois New York: Located less than 500 metres from Times Square, this 5-star hotel offers superb rooms with very chic decor, from €410 including breakfast. Strong points: ideal, quiet location, attentive staff.
- Riu Plaza Manhattan Times Square: Located next to the Rockfeller Center. Very comfortable, noise-isolated room from €450, breakfast €23. Strong points: very professional staff, varied breakfast, very easy to visit the centre of New York on foot.

If you don’t mind being a bit further from the centre (don’t worry, it’s still very easily accessible by public transport), here is my list of the best hotels in Wall Street.
It’s a bit quieter than the hotels in Times Square and also slightly less expensive for equivalent quality.
- Hilton Garden Inn NYC Financial Center/Manhattan Downtown: Located 160 metres from Battery Park. Comfortable, modern rooms from €225, breakfast €23. Strong points: the location close to the metro, very comfortable, practical for going to the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island.
