Los Angeles in 4 days: the best itinerary

It’s now time to plan your 4-day itinerary in Los Angeles.

For each day, I will give you all the details you need to organize your visits as well as a map showing the activities of the day.

This itinerary is perfectly optimized, you can follow it and enjoy a stress-free stay in Los Angeles!

I’m assuming you will be staying in Los Angeles for 4 full days, and that you will be using the Los Angeles All inclusive pass or skip the line tickets.

It’s the best way to not waste time waiting in line to buy tickets and to be able to see as many places as possible during your 4-day stay!

Day 1 – What to do and see in Los Angeles?

A. Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive

Start your 4-day trip to Los Angeles in the luxurious neighborhood of Beverly Hills.

This area, synonymous with Hollywood glamor and opulence, is the perfect place to discover the high-end lifestyle of LA.

Begin your exploration on Rodeo Drive, a world-famous shopping street lined with designer boutiques and luxury brands. Even if you’re not a fan of shopping, the window displays and architecture of this iconic street are really worth a look!

Then, take a leisurely walk through the beautifully manicured streets of Beverly Hills, admiring the elegant homes and gardens.

And don’t forget to pass by the famous Beverly Hills Hotel, known for its distinctive pink facade. 

B. Sunset Boulevard / Sunset Strip

Next, head to the famous Sunset Boulevard, and particularly the legendary Sunset Strip.

This area is known for its nightlife, historic music venues, and bustling energy.

During the day, the Strip offers a glimpse into its rock ‘n’ roll past, with landmarks like The Roxy Theatre and Whisky a Go Go.

Strolling along the Walk of Fame, you’ll come across stars dedicated to famous actors, musicians, directors, and producers. It’s a fun activity to search for the stars of your favorite celebrities!

The atmosphere here is always lively, with street performers and tourists from around the world.

Don’t forget to check out the TCL Chinese Theatre, where you can see the handprints and footprints of various movie stars.

D. Hollywood Sign

You simply can’t go on a 4-day trip to Los Angeles is complete without seeing the Hollywood Sign!

This world-famous landmark, situated on Mount Lee, is not only a symbol of the entertainment industry but also offers a great hiking opportunity with a rewarding view.

There are several hiking trails leading to the sign, each varying in difficulty. If it’s your first time in L.A, I recommend you to opt for the Hollydridge trail, as it’s easy and it offers some of the best views and photo opportunities.

Standing near the sign, you’ll have an impressive view of Los Angeles spread out below you.

E. Griffith Observatory

Conclude your first day in Los Angeles with a visit to the Griffith Observatory.

Perched atop the Hollywood Hills, the observatory offers not only educational exhibits about space and science but also some of the most stunning views of Los Angeles.

At the observatory, you can explore exhibits about the solar system, watch live shows in the planetarium, and use telescopes to gaze at the stars (weather permitting).

The observatory is a fantastic place for both adults and children, making science accessible and enjoyable. They are especially impressed by the Tesla Coil demonstration taking place several times a day.

The real highlight, however, is the view from the observatory’s terraces.

From here, you can see the Los Angeles skyline, the Hollywood Sign, and on clear days, even the Pacific Ocean. It’s a breathtaking sight, especially at sunset or during the early evening when the city lights begin to twinkle.

Day 2 in Los Angeles – Option 1: Universal Studios Hollywood

You should spend the second day of your 4-day itineray in Los Angeles at Universal Studios Hollywood, where entertainment and Hollywood magic come together.

This iconic theme park offers a wide range of attractions and shows, making it a must-visit destination for film lovers and thrill-seekers alike.

Start your visit with the famous Studio Tour, a behind-the-scenes look at real movie sets and a glimpse into the world of film-making.

This guided tour takes you through iconic sets like the Bates Motel from “Psycho” and the plane crash scene from “War of the Worlds.” I really liked the realistic effects of the “King Kong 360 3-D” experience – it’s super impressive!

After the Studio Tour, dive into the action with attractions like “Jurassic World – The Ride,” where you come face-to-face with dinosaurs, and “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” which brings the magic of J.K. Rowling’s novels to life.

Here, you can stroll through Hogsmeade, visit Hogwarts Castle, and even taste Butterbeer.

For an extra adrenaline rush, don’t miss the thrilling rides like “Transformers: The Ride-3D” and “Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride.”

And for a lighter experience, enjoy fun shows and character encounters throughout the park.

Super Nintendo World, the most recent addition to the park, is also really worth a look!

This new area brings Super Mario Bros game to life with colorful, interactive experiences. You’ll feel like you’ve jumped right into the game, with familiar sights, sounds, and characters all around.

To make the most of your visit to the park, you should really arrive early.

Day 2 – Option 2: South of Los Angeles

Day 2 visits:

B. Aquarium of the Pacific
C. Whale watching cruise

A. Battleship USS Iowa Museum

If you are not in the mood for a theme park, here is a second option for the 2nd day of your 4-day stay in Los Angeles.

Start with a visit to the Battleship USS Iowa Museum, located at Los Angeles Waterfront.

This historic battleship, known as the “Battleship of Presidents,” offers a unique opportunity to explore American naval history. The USS Iowa served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War, making it a vessel with a very rich history.

Touring the ship, you’ll get to see the massive gun turrets, the command center, crew quarters and learn more about the sailors life at sea.

The interactive exhibits are both educational and engaging, providing insights into the ship’s operations and its role in American history.

B. Long Beach and the Aquarium of the Pacific

After your visit to the USS Iowa, make your way to Long Beach for an enjoyable afternoon.

In Long Beach, you will find a waterfront with beautiful harbor views, eclectic shops, great seafood restaurants and the Aquarium of the Pacific. This expansive aquarium showcases a wide variety of marine life from the Pacific Ocean.

Interactive exhibits, touch tanks, and a variety of educational programs make it a fun and informative experience for all ages. Don’t miss the chance to see the sea otters and the impressive shark lagoon!

C. Newport Beach and a Whale Watching Cruise

To end your day in style, you will go to Newport Beach and embark on a whale watching cruise!

Newport Beach’s coastal waters are known for their rich marine life, making it one of the best spots in California for whale and dolphin watching.

During the cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat, along with other marine wildlife like sea lions and sea birds.

Day 3: Sightseeing in Los Angeles

Day 3 visits:

A. Helicopter tour
B. The Getty Center
C. Santa Monica Pier
D. Venice Beach

A. Helicopter Tour

For the third day of your 4-day trip Los Angeles, you should do an extraordinary experience – a helicopter tour over the city!

This is a unique way to see L.A. from a different perspective. As you soar above the cityscape, you’ll gain a bird’s-eye view of iconic landmarks and breathtaking landscapes.

Helicopter tours offer various routes, but I recommend choosing one that encompasses downtown L.A., the Hollywood Sign, and the stunning coastline. The sight of the beaches and the Pacific Ocean from above is beautiful.

My favorite moment was flying over the skyscrapers of downtown and along the famous Sunset Strip.

B. The Getty Center

After your exhilarating helicopter ride, head to The Getty Center, one of Los Angeles’s best art museums.

Nestled in the hills, the Getty Center is as famous for its architecture and gardens as it is for its art collection.

The museum’s extensive collection includes European paintings, decorative arts, and photography.

Wander through the galleries to see works from artists like Van Gogh, Monet, and Rembrandt. The museum’s architecture, with its use of natural light and open spaces, enhances the experience of viewing the art.

Outside, the Central Garden is the perfect spot to relax. The views of Los Angeles from the Getty are also spectacular, offering a panoramic vista that spans from the ocean to downtown.

C. Santa Monica Pier

After immersing yourself in art and culture at The Getty Center, head towards the coast to the famous Santa Monica Pier.

This historic landmark is a must-visit for anyone visiting Los Angeles, offering a mix of entertainment, dining, and nice ocean views.

The Pier features Pacific Park, an amusement park with a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, and various games and rides. If you’re spending 4 days in Los Angeles with your family, it’s one of the best activity to do!

The view from the top of the Ferris wheel is breathtaking, providing a panoramic outlook of the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica coastline.

The Pier is also a great spot for some classic boardwalk food, including ice cream, funnel cakes and seafood.

Stroll along the Pier, enjoy the lively atmosphere filled with street performers, and maybe come back at the end of the day to soak in the beautiful sunset over the ocean.

D. Venice Beach and Venice Canals

Next, make your way to Venice Beach.

Famous for its bohemian spirit, this beachfront neighborhood offers a unique blend of activities and sights. The Venice Boardwalk is bustling with street performers, local artists, and vendors selling a variety of goods.

Venice Beach is also known for Muscle Beach, an outdoor gym that has been a training spot for bodybuilders for decades.

The skatepark is another popular attraction, featuring local skaters showcasing their impressive skills!

After exploring the bustling boardwalk, take a peaceful walk through the Venice Canals.

Inspired by their namesake in Venice, Italy, these canals offer a tranquil escape with beautiful homes lining the waterways and small bridges to cross from one side of the canals to the other.

Day 4 – More places to visit in Los Angeles

Day 4 visits:

A. Warner Bros or Paramount Pictures Studio
B. The original Farmers market
C. The Grove
D. Museums
E. The Comedy Store or the Hollywood Bowl

A. Warner Bros Studios or Paramount Pictures Studio

On your final day in Los Angeles, dive into the world of Hollywood film-making with a tour of Warner Bros Studios or Paramount Pictures Studio.

Both offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at how your favorite movies and TV shows are made.

At Warner Bros Studios, you can explore iconic sets from shows like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory”, and visit the prop department and sound stages.

B. The Original Farmers Market

After your studio tour, head to The Original Farmers Market for a culinary adventure.

This historic Los Angeles landmark, established in 1934, is a bustling marketplace with over 100 vendors offering a variety of foods, goods, and unique culinary experiences.

Wander through the market to find something you love, from gourmet cheeses and fresh produce to artisanal pastries and international cuisines.

The Farmers Market is a great place to enjoy lunch, with plenty of options to satisfy any craving.

It’s also a great spot to pick up unique souvenirs or gifts from local artisans.

C. The Grove

Continue your exploration of Los Angeles at The Grove, a renowned outdoor shopping and entertainment complex.

Known for its beautiful, open-air environment, The Grove is a favorite among both locals and visitors for its mix of retail stores, dining options, and entertainment facilities.

Take a leisurely stroll through the beautifully landscaped walkways, enjoy shopping at a variety of stores ranging from high-end brands to unique boutiques, and experience the dynamic atmosphere.

Take a break at one of the numerous cafes.

The complex often hosts live music and events, making it a lively place to spend an afternoon or evening.

The Grove also features a charming double-decker trolley that runs between The Grove and the adjacent Farmers Market.

And don’t forget to pass by the dancing fountain near the main lawn to see the water show.

D. Museums

After your shopping session at The Grove, visit one or two of the nearby world-class museums. Each offers a unique experience and caters to different interests.

LACMA, the largest art museum in the western United States, features an extensive collection that spans the history of art from ancient times to the present.

Highlights include modern and contemporary works, Asian art, and an impressive sculpture garden. The museum’s iconic Urban Light installation is a favorite among visitors.

For car enthusiasts, the Petersen Automotive Museum is a treasure trove.

Featuring an extensive collection of cars and motorcycles, both classic and modern, the museum showcases the history and artistry of automotive design.

The building’s striking exterior is a work of art in itself.

Lastly, you can also visit La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, a unique natural history museum.

This site is one of the world’s most famous fossil sites, known for its active tar pits and fossil lab where you can see paleontologists at work.

The museum offers a window into life in the Ice Age with an extensive collection of fossilized remains of mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and other ancient animals.

E. The Comedy Store or The Hollywood Bowl

End your 4-day  stay in Los Angeles with an evening at either The Comedy Store or The Hollywood Bowl, depending on your mood and interests.

If you’re in the mood for laughter and a lively atmosphere, The Comedy Store on Sunset Strip is the perfect destination.

Renowned for its rich history in stand-up comedy, this iconic venue has been the starting point for many famous comedians. The club offers a variety of shows featuring both established and up-and-coming comedians in a casual setting.

Shows often sell out, especially on weekends, so book your tickets in advance. Arrive early to grab a good seat and enjoy the full experience.

Alternatively, spend an evening at The Hollywood Bowl, one of the most famous outdoor music venues in the United States.

Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, it’s a spectacular place to enjoy live music under the stars. The Bowl hosts a variety of performances, including classical concerts, jazz, rock bands, and special events like movie screenings with live orchestral accompaniment.
