In Marina Bay District

Marina Bay district, on the waterfront, surrounds Singapore Bay.

As an extremely central area, Marina Bay is the perfect place to stay: from there, you can easily get around by metro or on foot to other neighborhoods worth visiting during your trip.

This district also houses the city’s iconic hotel: the Marina Bay Sands. It’s famous for its splendid infinity pool, one of the highest in the world!

I recommend this district for your stay in Singapore:

  • Because it’s an excellent starting point to visit and discover the main attractions
  • To be by the seaside
  • For accommodation in the most modern and futuristic part of the city
  • To enjoy the green spaces
  • if budget isn’t a constraint, as there are only 5-star hotels in this area.

The district is the ideal place to discover:

  • Marina Bay Sands, one of the most famous hotels in the world. Even if you don’t stay there, you can enter as it houses a shopping center. However, access to the Infinity Pool, the rooftop pool, is reserved exclusively for guests!
  • The Sands Sky Park, the observation deck located on the 57th floor of Marina Bay Sands.
  • The Supertrees, giant metal trees covered in vegetation and LEDs that light up at night
  • Gardens by the Bay, a large park that is home to the Supertrees as well as the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, two giant greenhouses housing plants from around the world and even a waterfall.
  • The Merlion, a statue with a lion’s head and the body of a fish that is the symbol of the city.
  • The Singapore Flyer, the giant Ferris wheel of Singapore, which stands at 165 meters tall.
  • The ArtScience Museum and its different sections on art, culture, science, and technology.

In the Colonial District

The Colonial District is located in the center of Singapore and borders Marina Bay.

It was here that the city of Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, transforming quickly from a small fishing village into an important trading post for the British East India Company.

It’s a great place to stay in Singapore as it has retained its authentic charm with many colonial buildings to admire.

I recommend the Colonial District for your stay in Singapore:

  • If you’re looking for a traditional neighborhood
  • For an immersion into the history of Singapore
  • If you enjoy walking, you’ll be able to reach Marina Bay, Orchard, Bugis, and Little India on foot.

Things to do and see in Singapore’s Colonial District:

  • Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall: Singapore’s first City Hall
  • The City Hall, where you can find the National Gallery of Singapore
  • The Padang, a large cricket ground, the site of significant historical events in the city’s past. The Japanese used it to gather prisoners during World War II before sending them to camps.
  • St. Andrew’s Cathedral, wholly white and in the Neo-Gothic style
  • The Old Parliament transformed into the Arts House
  • Fort Canning, located on the Forbidden Hill: named so by the island’s early inhabitants who considered it a sacred place. Fort Canning Park is the ideal spot for a stroll or a picnic.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts.

Here’s my selection of the best hotels in the Colonial District

  • Lyf Funan Singapore: Located just next to Fort Canning Park. Industrial-style studios starting from 130€. Strong points: close to everything, cleanliness, room amenities. An excellent choice for staying in the center of Singapore!
  • Citadines Connect City Centre Singapore: Situated next to the Singapore Culture Museum and Fort Canning. Cozy and colorful double rooms starting from 150€. Strong points: pool, metro 5 minutes on foot, friendly staff.
  • Carlton Hotel Singapore: A 5-star hotel located about a 10-minute walk from the City Hall. Spacious rooms with large windows offering city views start from 280€, breakfast for 29€. Strong points: excellent location near everything, very pleasant staff, variety, and quality of breakfast.
  • Swissotel The Stamford: Located next to City Hall, across from the cathedral. Elegant and comfortable double rooms with views of Marina Bay starting from 425€, breakfast for 32€. Strong points: central location, breathtaking view, swimming pool, breakfast. It’s my top recommendation for a luxury stay in Singapore.
  • Raffles Singapore: Also located in the Colonial District, Raffles is the other legendary hotel for your stay in Singapore. While Marina Bay Sands is known for its modernity, Raffles embodies historic charm. Opened in 1887, the colonial-style palace has hosted many celebrities. You can stay in one of its sumptuous suites starting from 1100€ per night. Strong points: the historic setting, the hotel’s beauty, room service, and the swimming pool. Simply the best luxury hotel in the Colonial District!

Orchard is located north of the colonial district.

The Orchard district is simply the best place to stay in Singapore for shopping.

It features an immense avenue over 2 km long, lined with shopping centers and upscale boutiques.

On Orchard Road, you’ll find everything from very luxurious stores (Louis Vuitton, Hermès…) to international brands (H&M, Victoria’s Secret).

There are also plenty of dining options: you can dine in excellent gourmet restaurants or in the food courts of the department stores.

You’ll love this district of Singapore:

In Chinatown District

Chinatown is located southwest of the center of Singapore, right next to Marina Bay.

Like all Chinatowns around the world, the area is particularly lively, with plenty of small shops, street stalls, and Chinese restaurants.

It’s one of the oldest districts of the city.

It’s also well connected, thanks to the metro station located at the heart of Chinatown.

This district is ideal for your stay in Singapore:

  • If you’re looking for a lively and cosmopolitan place
  • To discover the typical local cuisine

Chinatown district is great for:

  • Chinatown Heritage Centre, to learn everything about the lives of Chinatown’s first inhabitants, the Chinese immigrants. The museum notably recreates the interior of a shophouse, those typical Southeast Asian residences which served as shops on the ground floor and homes upstairs.
  • Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore
  • Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, a beautiful temple with typical Chinese architecture
  • Ann Siang Hill Park, a green pathway leading to Thian Hock Keng Temple, a Taoist temple dedicated to the goddess of the sea
  • Masjid Jamae (or ‘Chulia’) mosque, one of the oldest in the city.

In Little India District

Little India is located to the north of Singapore’s city center.

Much like Chinatown, Little India is a vibrant and typical historical district.

It shares many characteristics with Chinatown, but, as you might guess, it gives you the opportunity to experience Hindu culture.

The district is home to several temples, shops selling saris and spices, and Indian restaurants.

Must-see spots in Singapore’s Indian district:

  • Tan Teng Niah House, a very colorful house built by a Chinese merchant, and a popular Instagram spot!
  • Sri Veeramakaliamman, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kali, wife of Shiva
  • Little India Arcade: a complex housing souvenir shops and stores selling Indian fabrics, saris, clothing, and sculptures
  • Tekka Centre: a bustling indoor market, highly picturesque!
  • Indian Heritage Centre, a recent museum focused on the culture and history of Indians in Singapore
  • Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple: dedicated to Vishnu, features a 20-meter-high tower
  • Sakya Muni Buddha Gaya Temple, also known as the Temple of a Thousand Lights, where you can find a giant Buddha statue, 15 meters tall and weighing 300 tons.

If you’re on a tighter budget, here are a few hotels where you can stay in Singapore without breaking the bank:

  • Dream Chaser Boutique Capsule Hotel: Located in Kampong Glam, not far from the Colonial District. Double rooms starting at 100€. A great choice for inexpensive accommodations in Singapore.
