In the Belvaros District
To stay in the heart of Budapest and be close to all the main monuments and museums, Belvaros is the ideal central district.
Known as the 5th district of Budapest, it’s where you will find most of the city’s must-see attractions as well as numerous bars and restaurants.
For me, it’s the best district to stay in Budapest!
I recommend this district for your stay in Budapest:
- If you want to be in the city center and easily reach other districts on foot or by public transport
- To be near all the main places to visit
- To go out in the evening.
Belvaros district is the ideal place to discover:
- The Budapest Parliament: Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the building is particularly impressive
- St. Stephen’s Basilica: a magnificent basilica, both inside and out. Its dome offers a panoramic view over the entire city.
- The Hungarian State Opera House, where you can attend performances at very affordable prices
- The Shoes on the Danube Bank, a memorial to the victims of the fascists
- The Chain Bridge: a very nice structure that connects the two banks of the Danube
- Vorosmarty Square
- Erzsébet Square, where the Budapest Ferris wheel is located
- The Great Synagogue of Budapest
- Vaci Street: the iconic shopping street.

Terézváros district is located in the 6th arrondissement, just east of Belváros.
It’s an excellent choice for accommodation in Budapest close to the city center!
Quite upscale, it hosts beautiful neo-Renaissance and neo-Baroque buildings as well as numerous shops.
You’ll love this neighborhood:

- If you want to be close to the city center
- If you’re interested in culture and architecture.
In Terézváros district, you shouldn’t miss:
- Andrássy Avenue, lined with shops and restaurants
- The House of Terror: a museum about the Nazi and Soviet regimes
- Heroes’ Square, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Széchenyi Thermal Baths, the most famous in the city
- Vajdahunyad Castle, dating back to the 19th century.

The Buda district is located on the other side of the Danube compared to the center. Simply cross the famous Chain Bridge to travel between the two districts.
Older and more typical than Belváros, it’s home to some of the city’s must-see attrations. Lively during the day, it becomes quieter in the evening.

Erzsébetváros district is also located East of the city center and South of Terézváros.
It’s especially known as the place to stay in Budapest if you want to party!
With its ruin bars (a city’s specialty!) and restaurants, it’s the perfect spot to go out at night, or even all night long.
You should consider this district:
- If you’re looking for a very lively and festive area
- For its bohemian and trendy ambiance
- For a stay with friends in Budapest.
There aren’t any specific sights to see, but you’ll be just a few minutes’ walk from the city center. So it remains a very convenient district to stay in during your visit to Budapest!
