In the Village of Manarola
Just a quick note before we start: all the villages in Cinque Terre are connected by train. Therefore, geographically, there isn’t one village better than another for visiting Cinque Terre.
The choice will rather depend on the available accommodations.
However, if you had to choose just one, I would recommend Manarola! There’s a reason why Manarola is the most famous and visited of the five—it’s, in my opinion, the most beautiful village in Cinque Terre.
With its houses built along the cliff, its stone bridge, and rocks beaten by the waves, it’s no wonder it’s considered the most typical and picturesque village in the region.
Exiting the train station, head towards the sea and take the promenade that runs along the waterfront.
This is where all the postcard pictures are taken. The view is incredible!
Here are my top hotel picks in Manarola
- Posidonia Cinque Terre: Located 2 minutes from the center. Spacious, clean, and well-equipped double room from 115€. Strong points: the garden, the terrace, the owner’s kindness. This is my favorite for its excellent value for money in Cinque Terre!
- Ca’ D’Andrean: Located in the center and only a 5-minute walk from the train station. Tastefully decorated, very comfortable double room from 170€, breakfast included. Strong points: the view from the terrace, the delicious breakfast, the garden, the attentive staff. One of the best choices for staying in the most beautiful village of Cinque Terre!
- Arpaiu: In the heart of Manarola village. Double room with an exceptional sea view from 180€, breakfast at 20€. Strong points: the large terrace with a view, the room sizes.
In the Village of Vernazza
Vernazza is located in a small bay at the bottom of the cliffs.
Famous for its seaside church, colorful fishing boats moored in the harbor, and houses with brightly colored facades, it’s one of the most picturesque villages in Cinque Terre.
By taking Via Roma, lined with shops and restaurants, you’ll reach Santa Margherita church square, the harbor, and a tiny pebble beach, perfect for a refreshing dip.
You can also climb up to the Doria Castle tower (1.50€), towering 60 meters above the village. It offers a beautiful panorama over the sea, vineyards, and the Cinque Terre National Park.
Where to Stay Vernazza?
- Vernazza vacation 3: Located in the village, this B&B offers double rooms from 120€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: the warm welcome, the room amenities.

In Riomaggiore village
There are two walks you can enjoy in the village:
- Walk up the main street from the train station. It’s lined with shops and cafes.
- Head down towards the jetty to admire the view over the whole village and the colorful houses on each side. It’s also a great spot for a quick dip if you’re feeling hot!
In the village, you shouldn’t miss the following historic buildings:
- Riomaggiore Castle, built in 1260
- The Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in the 14th century
- The Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary with beautiful stained glass windows.

- Stellio Affittacamere: A 5-minute walk from the train station. Double room with elegant decorations and exposed stone walls starting from €210. Strong points: exceptional service, very friendly owner, well-appointed rooms, parking, the fridge is stocked with breakfast essentials.
In Corniglia district
Corniglia is the only village in the Cinque Terre that is built at the top of a cliff and does not have direct access to the sea.
To get there from the railway station, you can either take a quite steep staircase of over 300 steps (the Lardarina) or go for the less exhausting option: take the shuttle bus!
Surrounded by vineyards, Corniglia’s architecture is slightly different from the other four villages: the houses are indeed colorful but narrower and shorter.
It’s also the smallest of the Cinque Terre villages, so a stroll along the main alley, Via Fieschi is quick yet very pleasant. You should also visit the panoramic terrace of Santa Maria to enjoy the view over Vernazza and Manarola.
Best hotels to stay in the village of Corniglia
- Daa Maduneta: Located in the heart of the village. Recently renovated double room with sea view starting from €135, breakfast included. Strong points: the view, the very friendly host. The best place to stay in Corniglia!
In the village of Monterosso
Monterosso is the northernmost village of the Cinque Terre and is also the largest.
The village is divided into two parts by a rocky strip extending into the sea:
1) The Fégina district.
This is where you’ll arrive if you come by train: the station opens right onto Via Egina, a shopping street with stores and restaurants.
This is also where you’ll find the largest beach in the Cinque Terre. Monterosso is the only Cinque Terre village where you can swim on real beaches instead of just near the harbor.
2) The historic center is the second area of the village where you can take a walk.
It also has a small beach (where you can rent deckchairs and umbrellas) and many souvenir shops and cafes along Via Roma.
Where to Stay in Monterosso
- La Rosa Dei Venti: Located a 10-minute walk from the train station and 5 minutes from the beach. Comfortable and very clean double rooms starting at 100€. Strong points: the location and the warm welcome.

In La Spezia
La Spezia is just 5 minutes away by train from Riomaggiore.
La Spezia is the nearest large town around Cinque Terre.
It’s mostly considered a gateway town, a convenient stop for going to Cinque Terre.
But if you have a bit of time, either before or after your Cinque Terre visit, you can visit La Spezia and see:
- San Giorgio Castle: it hosts the archaeological museum and offers a beautiful view over the city
- The Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in 1271
