In Innenstadt-Altstadt District
The Innenstadt-Altstadt district is the historic center of Frankfurt.
This area was almost entirely destroyed during the bombings in World War II and has been rebuilt almost identically to its original state.
With its cobbled streets and historic buildings, it’s the city’s most touristic area
Here, you will find Frankfurt’s main monuments, along with numerous shops and restaurants.
For me, Innenstadt-Altstadt is the best area to stay in Frankfurt!
I recommend this district for your stay in Frankfurt:
- Because it’s the best spot to explore the city on foot thanks to its central location
- For being close to all the must-see attractions
- If you enjoy cultural visits.
This area is the perfect place to discover:
- Romerberg Square: the main square in the historic center, lined with half-timbered houses. You’ll also find the city hall and the ancient Church of St. Nicholas here
- St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the city’s largest church
- Goethe House Museum, located in the house where the famous writer Goethe was born and lived
- Zeil Street, Frankfurt’s main shopping boulevard
- Frankfurt’s Historical Museum, to learn more about the city’s history
- Main Tower, from which you can enjoy a 360° view of Frankfurt
- St. Paul’s Church
- The Alte Oper, Frankfurt’s Opera House.
Here is my selection of the best hotels in Frankfurt’s old town
- Hotel Schopenhauer Hof: Located only 250 meters from St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral. Double room from 120€ per night, breakfast 19€. Strong points: The view over the river, the rich breakfast buffet, the central location.
- mainhaus Stadthotel Frankfurt: Located a 2-minute walk from Zeil Street. Bright double room from €130 per night, breakfast €23. Strong points: Breakfast buffet with organic products, very comfortable beds, friendly staff. Undoubtedly the best value for money in Altstadt!
- Flemings Selection Hotel Frankfurt-City: Located 400 meters from the Alte Oper. Spacious double rooms from 180€ per night breakfast 24€. Strong points: Delicious breakfast on the lovely terrace, very nice views, excellent location.
- Motel One Frankfurt-Römer: Located 4 minutes walk from the Goethe House Museum. Modern double room from 190€ per night, breakfast 27€. Strong points: Great atmosphere in the bar, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, very central location – a great hotel for a romantic stay in Frankfurt!
- Steigenberger Icon Frankfurter Hof: Located just two blocks from Frankfurt’s Archaeological Museum, this luxury hotel offers warm, classically styled rooms from €360, breakfast €35. Strong points: Several restaurants, fabulous spa, very attentive staff. Simply the best luxury hotel in the Altstadt!
In the Districts Around Frankfurt’s Old Town
Unlike other cities where points of interest are scattered across various districts, in Frankfurt, they are primarily located in the historic center.
If you choose to stay outside the old town, there might not be much to see, but you will be in quieter, more residential neighborhoods.
Even so, you can quickly reach the center on foot or by public transport.
If you’re looking to book accommodation outside the historic center, I recommend the Westend, Nordend, or Sachsenhausen districts.

- BIO-Hotel Villa Orange: Hotel located 10 minutes walk from Zeil street. from 200€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: Super friendly staff, varied, organic and delicious breakfast, quiet location – perfect for a quiet stay in Nordend (Frankfurt)!
- SAKS Urban Design Hotel Frankfurt: Located 300 meters from the Senckenberg Museum. Enjoy comfortable contemporary rooms from 300€, breakfast 20€. Strong points: Excellent spa, bar and terrace, a few minutes from the Messe Frankfurt, close to the train.
- Hilton Frankfurt City Centre: This 5-star hotel is just 10 minutes from the Goethe House Museum. Stay in elegantly decorated rooms from €360, breakfast €35. Strong points: Large swimming pool, spa and wellness center, panoramic city views, excellent breakfast, central location – My favorite hotel for a romantic stay near Frankfurt city center!
Near Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt Airport is among the busiest airports in Europe.
Therefore, you might have a layover there and need accommodation for the night before catching an early morning flight. So here are the best hotels!

- Zum grünen Baum: Located 3 km from the Airport. Modern double room from 100€ per night, breakfast 13€. Strong points: River view, nice restaurant and good food, very friendly staff – the perfect place to stay near Frankfurt Airport for a reasonable price!
- NH Frankfurt Airport: Located 1.5 km from the Airport. Comfortable double room from 110€ per night, breakfast 28€. Strong points: Free airport transfers, comfortable room, great staff.
- Hyatt Place Frankfurt Airport: Located 4 minutes drive from the Airport. Modern double room from 150€ per night, breakfast 25€. Strong points: Vegan option for breakfast, business lounge, next to subway station, quiet rooms.
- b’mine Hotel Frankfurt Airport: Located 2 km from the airport. Full studios from 160€ per night, breakfast 28€. Strong points: Terrace overlooking the airport ✈️, wonderful breakfast, excellent Spa, carloft (park your car on your room’s balcony!). Definitely one of the best hotels near the Airport.
- Frankfurt Airport Marriott Hotel: This 5-star hotel is located near Terminal 1 of the Airport. Double rooms start from 230€, breakfast 35€. Strong points: Fitness center, sauna and restaurant, airport connection. My recommendation for a first-class stay at Frankfurt Airport!
The Area to Avoid in Frankfurt
I strongly advise against booking accommodation close to Frankfurt train station
Don’t worry, all hotels I selected in this guide are outside of the train station area.
It’s the city’s red-light district, notorious not only for prostitution, but also as a dangerous area due to drug trafficking (day and night).
The streets are filled with homeless people and drug addicts.
If you arrive in Frankfurt by train, it’s better not to linger in this area or, even less, to spend the night there.
Where to Stay in Frankfurt on a Budget
If you’re on a tighter budget, here’s a selection of affordable hotels to stay in Frankfurt:
- Jugendherberge Frankfurt – Haus der Jugend: Youth hostel located 10 minutes walk from Frankfurt Cathedral. Bed in shared dormitory from 40€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: Good location, quiet, river view, comfortable beds – my recommendation for a cheap stay in Frankfurt!
- Homaris Apartments Frankfurt – Digital Check-In: Nice apartments located 500 meters from the Museum of Modern Art (MMK). Double studio from 70€ per night. Strong points: Centrally located, quiet area, well-equipped kitchen.
- The Blasky: Located 7 minutes walk from the tram station. Double room from 90€ per night, breakfast 28€. Strong points: Nice restaurant and terrace, comfortable and clean rooms.
Where to Stay in Frankfurt with Family
- Aparthotel Adagio Frankfurt City Messe: Located 200 meters from the Senckenberg Museum and close to transportation. Apartment with double bed and sofa bed from 230€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: Friendly and helpful staff, comfortable and quiet. It is my choice for its excellent value for money for a family trip.
- Villa Westend Hotel an der Messe: Located 1 block from the Natural History Museum. Family room with 2 double beds from 260€ per night. Strong points: Quiet neighborhood, well connected, friendly staff.
- Paulaner am Dom Hotel: Located next to the Frankfurt Cathedral. Family room with 2 double beds from 410€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: Balconies facing the Cathedral, good restaurant, attentive staff, excellent breakfast.
