In the Old Town of Geneva
The Old Town district, also known as “Cité-Centre,” is the historic center of Geneva.
Bordered on one side by the Rhone and Lake Geneva, and on the other by the Arve river, it’s the most touristy and well-known district of the city.
Here, you’ll find Geneva’s main monuments, as well as numerous shops and restaurants lining the charming cobblestone streets.
The Old Town is simply the best area if you plan to visit Geneva as a tourist.
You should stay in this district:
- As it’s an excellent starting point for exploring the city on foot
- If you are interested in history and heritage
The district is the ideal place to discover:
- Saint-Pierre Cathedral, a Protestant church. You can climb to the top of its tower and visit the Maccabees Chapel.
- The Flower Clock located in the English Garden. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Geneva!
- Place and Tower of Molard: built in the 16th century, it was part of the fortified walls of the city
- Place du Bourg-de-Four, with its fountain and many cafes and restaurants. The facade of the Art and History Museum is superb.
- The Art and History Museum: this is the largest museum in Geneva. The permanent exhibition is free for everyone.
- The Rath Museum, Switzerland’s first fine arts museum
- Maison Tavel, Geneva’s oldest private house, today turned into a museum
- Parc des Bastions housing the Wall of the Reformation with its five statues of five meters high + six giant chess games
- La Promenade de la Treille where you’ll find the world’s longest wooden bench.
Where to stay in Genveva old town?
- citizenM Geneva: Located 250 meters from Lake Geneva. Modern double room from 215 euros per night, breakfast 28 euros. Strong points: domotized room, lake view, youthful decoration, very central location. A great choice for its excellent value for money in the Center of Geneva.
- Marmont Hotel: Located 8 minutes walk from the Museum of Art and History. Double room with colorful and contemporary decor from 270€ per night, breakfast 30€. Strong points: good facilities, cozy, comfortable beds.
- Hôtel Longemalle: Located 1 block from Geneva’s Floral Clock. Room from 420 euros per night, breakfast 30 euros. Strong points: Terrace, Lebanese restaurant, newly remodeled, very comfortable beds.
- Hôtel de la Cigogne: This 5-star hotel is just 5 minutes from St. Peter’s Cathedral. Stay in elegantly decorated rooms from €470, breakfast €38. Strong points: Friendly and attentive staff, delicious breakfast, perfect location. This is my recommendation for a high-end stay in Geneva!
In Pâquis and Saint-Gervais Districts
Pâquis and Saint-Gervais districts are adjacent and located on the other side of the Rhone, opposite the Old Town of Geneva.
From there, you will just have to walk across one of the bridges spanning the Rhone to reach the historic center within minutes.
It’s along the banks of these two districts that you will find some of the finest luxury hotels in Geneva.
Pâquis and Saint-Gervais are very popular amongst locals and tourists alike, thanks to their location along the lake and river.
These districts are perfect for your stay in Geneva:
- If you want to stay in a fairly central area
- To enjoy a lively atmosphere especially in the evening, with its bars and clubs (in Pâquis)
- For being close to Geneva train station.
In Pâquis and Saint-Gervais, you shouldn’t miss:
- Pâquis Baths: located by the lake, they offer water activities in summer and sauna/hammam in winter
- Brunswick Monument: a neo-Gothic-style mausoleum
- Rotonde du Mont Blanc offers a lovely view over Geneva’s water jet and the Mont Blanc. But it’s best known as the place where Empress Sissi was assassinated.
- Strolling along the quays of Mont-Blanc and Wilson.
Here are my favorite hotels in Pâquis and Saint-Gervais Districts
- Kipling Manotel: Located 10 minutes walk from the Brunswick Monument. Double room from 200€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: close to the train station, very tasty breakfast, free card to use the public transports, business center. it’s the perfect place to stay in Pâquis for a reasonable price!
- Hotel Bernina Geneva: Located 300 meters from the Mont-Blanc pier. Cozy minimalist room from 235€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: friendly staff, perfect area for walking, modern and comfortable.
- Hotel Suisse: Located 15 minutes walk from the Pâquis Baths. Double room from 250 euros per night, breakfast 17 euros. Strong points: Abundant buffet, views of the city, opposite the train station.
- Hotel Bristol: Warm hotel just 5 minutes walk from the Rotonde de Mont Blanc. Double room from 355€ per night, breakfast included. Strong points: Nice decoration, Spa, great breakfast, central location, recently renovated, one of my favorite hotels for a romantic stay in Geneva!
- Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva: This wonderful 5-star hotel is just 5 minutes from the Clock of Flowers. Stay in elegantly decorated rooms from 1,570€, breakfast 57€. Strong points: delightful spa and pool, stunning lake views, pet-friendly. Simply the best luxury hotel in Saint-Gervais!
In Eaux-Vives District
Eaux-Vives district is located to the East of Geneva’s historic center.
More modern, it’s a very pleasant district with its numerous green spaces by Lake Geneva.
It’s also the best place to stay in Geneva if you want to enjoy the beaches.
It’s primarily an administrative and residential district, but very lively with lots of restaurants.
You’ll like this district:
- To enjoy nature and beautiful walks by the water.
- For a family stay in Geneva.
- If you want to take a dip in Lake Geneva (only during summer!)
What to see in the Eaux-Vives district:
- Geneva’s famous Jet d’Eau, rising 140 meters high. It’s the symbol of the city.
- Eaux-Vives Park and La Grange Park
- Eaux-Vives Beach: a nice beach for cooling off in the lake
- Geneva Beach, where you’ll be able to enjoy a huge swimming pool and a pebble beach
- The Natural History Museum.
The best hotels in Eaux-Vives district
- Hôtel Pax: Located 12 minutes walk from the Jet d’Eau. Pleasant double room from 215€ per night. Strong points: good location, quiet area, comfortable room. A great choice for its excellent value for money.
- Hôtel Résidence Parc des Eaux Vives: This 18th century villa houses a quiet hotel located within the Eaux Vives Park. Stay in a quiet room overlooking the garden from 310€, breakfast included. Strong points: Helpful staff, natural surroundings, beautiful facilities, unique experience – The perfect hotel for a romantic weekend in Geneva!
Where to Stay in Geneva near the airport?
Staying near the aiport is a good idea if you have an early morning flight to catch.
- B&B HOTEL Geneva Airport: Conveniently located near the aiport. Double room from 100€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: Free airport transfer, pet-friendly, rich buffet. The perfect choice to stay near the Airport without breaking the bank!
- Nash Suites Airport Hotel: This accommodation is located 1 km from the airport. Double room from 130 euros per night, breakfast 25 euros. Strong points: Sauna and terrace, friendly staff, airport transfer.
- NH Geneva Airport Hotel: Located a 10-minute walk from the Alpine Garden. Double room from 150 euros per night, breakfast 30 euros. Strong points: free airport shuttle, good breakfast, very clean.
- Novotel Suites Genève Aéroport: Located 5 minutes from the Airport. Double room from 180€ per night, breakfast 26€. Strong points: Very comfortable bed, next to a shopping center, very friendly staff.
- Crowne Plaza Geneva, an IHG Hotel: Located 15 minutes by shuttle from the Palexpo Exhibition Center. Double room from 250 euros per night, breakfast 36 euros. Strong points: friendly staff, comfortable facilities, good bar and restaurant. Simply the best hotel near the airport!
Where to Stay in Geneva on a Budget
If you’re on a tighter budget, here is a selection of affordable accommodations in Geneva:
- City Hostel Geneva: Hostel located 15 minutes walk from the Rotonde de Mont-Blanc. Bed in a shared dormitory from 50€ per night or in a private room for 110€ (shared bathroom). Strong points: Shared kitchen, cleanliness, location.
- Geneva Hostel: Located 600 meters from the Brunswick Monument. Bed in shared dormitory from 50€ per night, or in private room for 80€, breakfast included. Strong points: Restaurant, common living room, clean.
- Hotel Sagitta: Located 500 meters from La Grange Park. Comfortable studios from 170€ per night, breakfast 20€. Strong points: kitchenette, centrally located, helpful staff, good bedding.
- Tiffany Hotel: Art Noveau style hotel located 6 minutes walk from the Rath Museum. Double room from 170€, breakfast 28€. Strong points: Rich breakfast, comfortable beds, Spa and wellness center, quiet area – it’s the perfect place to stay in Cité-Centre for a reasonable price (for geneva!)
Where to stay in Geneva with Family
- Jade Manotel: Located 15 minutes from the Paquis Lighthouse. Family room (double bed and sofa bed) from 270 euros per night, breakfast 20 euros. Strong points: free breakfast for children under 12, terrace and garden, close to transportation.
- Novotel Genève Centre: Located 150 meters from the Mont-Blanc quay. Family room with 2 double beds from 280€ per night. Strong points: pet-friendly, spa and wellness center, close to train station.
- Warwick Geneva: Located 2 minutes walk from the Gare de Géneve train station. Family room (double bed and 2 singles) from 350 euros per night, breakfast 30 euros. Strong points: Balcony, excellent breakfast, attentive staff – the best place to stay in Geneva with the family!
What is the Best Hotel in Geneva?
If you’re looking for the best hotel in Geneva, I can only recommend the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva.
For something a bit more affordable but still in the luxury category, you should also consider booking a night or more at Hôtel de la Cigogne.
