In the Central district on Hong Kong Island

As its name suggests, the Central district is the central area of Hong Kong Island.

Located by Victoria Harbour, it’s the commercial and financial heart of the city.

Featuring numerous boutiques, shopping malls and plenty of restaurants, this district is very dynamic and bustling all day long.

And in the evening, it’s the perfect place to enjoy the bars and clubs for a night out.

If you’re wondering where to stay in downtown Hong Kong for a first time visit, this is the ideal area!

I recommend Central district for your stay in Hong Kong:

  • Because it’s an excellent starting point to see the main tourist sites
  • For shopping
  • To enjoy the nightlife
  • If you’re looking for a bustling area.

The district is the perfect place to discover:

  • Victoria Peak, the highest peak in Hong Kong, offering a panoramic view over the entire city. To get there, you should take The Peak Tram, the tramway that departs from the Central district.
  • The Peak Tower, a large shopping center with a rooftop terrace, offering a great view of the city.
  • Hong Kong Ferris Wheel. Especially nice at night to admire the city lights!
  • The Central and Western District Promenade for a waterfront stroll.
  • Man Mo Temple, the oldest temple in Hong Kong
  • The numerous shopping malls: Central Market, IFC Mall, Pacific Place, and more.
  • Hong Kong Maritime Museum and its boat models.
  • Hong Kong Botanical Garden
  • Star Ferry, to cross Victoria Harbour and reach the other side of the city.
  • Upper Lascar Row, for its antique shops.

Tsim Sha Tsui district is located on the other side of Victoria Bay, on Kowloon Peninsula.

While it shares many similarities with Central district, it’s a bit more authentic.

Here you’ll find both modern shopping centers as well as small local shops, in addition to numerous bars and restaurants.

It’s also very well-connected by public transport.

Best things to do in Tsim Sha Tsui:

  • The Avenue of Stars: a waterfront promenade featuring handprints of celebrities (just like in Los Angeles!). It’s also one of the best spots to enjoy the view of Hong Kong Island at night when it’s all lit up.

In Mong Kok District

Mong Kok district is located to the North of Tsim Sha Tsui.

Mong Kok literally translates to “busy area” in Cantonese.

And that’s no surprise, as it has made its way into the record books as one of the most densely populated areas in the world.

Here, you will find even more of the traditional atmosphere, typical to Asian cities, with narrow alleys and small shops everywhere.

Although there aren’t any major attractions, you should consider visiting the Ladies’ Market where you can pick up souvenirs, clothes, and grab a bite at the food stalls. You can also check out the Flower Market with its blooming aisles.

Sneaker enthusiasts won’t want to miss Fa Yuen Street, also known as “Sneakers Street”. Here you’ll find all the big-name brands: Adidas, Nike, Jimmy Choo, and more.

Mong Kok is just a 15-minute metro ride away from the central districts of Hong Kong.
