Manchester City Centre district is the heart of the city.
It’s home to a mix of contemporary high-rise buildings and Victorian-era edifices.
Particularly dynamic and lively, it’s the city’s most touristic district, featuring numerous stores and restaurants.
If you’re looking for a place to stay in Manchester’s city center, this is the best district: most must-see attractions of the city are located there and you can easily get around on foot or by public transport to the other areas of the city
This area is the perfect place to stay in Manchester:
- Because it’s an excellent starting point to see the main sights
- For shopping
- If you love history and culture
- If you’re looking for a lively place.
The district is the ideal place to discover:
- The Town Hall. With its Neo-Gothic architectural style, it’s truly impressive!
- Albert Square, Manchester’s main square
- Manchester Library: a must-see for its architecture and dome
- The John Rylands Library, where some scenes from the Harry Potter movies were shot
- Manchester Art Gallery, an art museum with free admission
- Chinatown and its many Asian restaurants
- Market Street and the Arndale Centre for shopping
- Deansgate, one of the city’s main avenues. It’s lined with boutiques and restaurants.
- The People’s History Museum on the history of the city and its working class.

- The Edwardian Manchester, A Radisson Collection Hotel: This 5* hotel is located 2 minutes’ walk from Deansgate, in a historic building. It offers tastefully decorated rooms, skilfully blending the old and the new. From 170$, breakfast at 35$. Strong points: spa with indoor pool, excellent restaurant and breakfast, the beauty of the hotel. An excellent choice for a romantic stay in central Manchester!
- Stock Exchange Hotel: Luxury hotel in the heart of the city. Elegant, cosy rooms from 200$, breakfast 33$. Strong points: the hotel’s standing, the fantastic breakfast, the attentive staff. This is my recommendation for a luxury stay in Manchester!
In the Northern Quarter
If you’re looking to go out at night during your trip to Manchester, you can opt for an accommodation in the Northern Quarter.
As its name suggests, it’s just north of the city center, a few minutes’ walk away.
It’s the district for hipsters and artists, with its art galleries, vintage boutiques, record shops and trendy bars.
It’s also one of the best places to go out for a drink in the evening.
I recommend the Northern Quarter as a good place to stay in Manchester:

The Northern Quarter is the perfect place to discover:
- Manchester Cathedral, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture
- The National Football Museum, dedicated to the history of English and international soccer
- Manchester Craf and Design Center: an attractive covered gallery housing several artists’ boutiques.
- Numerous works of street art
- Typical English pubs with live music.
Where to sleep in the Northern Quarter
- Motel One Manchester Royal Exchange: Located 5 minutes’ walk from the city center or the National Football Museum. Double room from 85$, breakfast from 16$. Strong points: friendly staff, comfortable bedding, varied and hearty breakfast. A great place to stay close to Manchester city center.
- Crowne Plaza Manchester City Centre, an IHG Hotel: Ideally located to visit the center and to enjoy the bars of the Northern Quarter. Spacious double room with large windows, from 120$, breakfast 18$. Strong points: pleasant staff, facilities, comfort.
- Hotel Indigo Manchester – Victoria Station, an IHG Hotel: located right next to the Football Museum. Double room with city view from 140$, breakfast 24$. Strong points: next to the station, friendly staff, quality bedding. My favorite hotel in the Northern Quarter!
In the Castlefield district
Castlefield lies to the southwest of Manchester city center.
It’s a quiet, residential area bordered by the Manchester Canal.
You’ll be close to the hustle and bustle, yet in a more peaceful district.
It’s the ideal place to stay in Manchester for a family holiday, or if you’re looking for some peace and quiet!
Best things to do and see in Castlefield:
- The ancient Roman fort of Mamucium, to learn more about the Roman past of the city
- Bridgewater canal, built in the 18th century
- The Museum of Science and Industry, which traces the history of the city’s industry.
- Stroll around the Castlefield Viaduct
- Enjoy a drink on a canal-side terrace.

- Manchester Marriott Victoria & Albert Hotel: located 5 minutes’ walk from many stores and restaurants, the hotel is housed in a former 19th-century warehouse. Elegant rooms with exposed red brick walls from 130$, breakfast from 21$. Strong points: very good restaurant, great breakfast, stylish rooms. This is my recommendation for an upscale stay in Castlefield!
