In Altstadt – Lehel District
Altstadt district corresponds to Munich’s historical center.
This is the most touristic and emblematic area of the Bavarian capital, with its pedestrian cobblestone streets and historic buildings.
The medieval old town is home to Munich’s main monuments, as well as numerous shops and restaurants.
For me, Altstadt is the best district to stay in Munich!
I recommend this district for your stay in Munich:
- Because it’s the best area to stay to visit the city on foot
- To be close to all the must-see attractions
- If you enjoy vibrant neighborhoods.
- For shopping.
Highlights of the district include:
- Marienplatz, the main square in Munich
- The Neue Rathaus, or New Town Hall, with the famous clock that comes to life at certain times to represent scenes from the 16th century.
- The Altes Rathaus, the Old Town Hall.
- Peterskirche, the oldest Catholic church in Germany. From the top of its tower, you can enjoy a lovely view of Munich.
- The Viktualienmarkt, literally the “victuals market,” where you’ll find all the best of German gastronomy!
- The Hofbräuhaus am Platzl. Established in the 16th century, this is Munich’s most famous brewery!
- The Munich Residence, also known as the “Residence Palace.” It was the seat of the Bavarian royalty from the 14th to the 20th century.
- The Englischer Garten: a vast park that houses a Chinese pagoda.

If you love art and culture, Maxvorstadt district is the ideal place to stay in Munich.
Here you will find all the city’s most renowned museums as well as the large University of Bavaria.
This area, with its dynamic atmosphere is located to the northwest of the old town.
If you’re looking for a place to stay in Munich for a weekend in the center, it’s an excellent choice!
Maxvorstadt is perfect for accommodation in Munich:

Ludwigsvorstadt district is adjacent to the historic center, just south of the central station.
It’s particularly famous for hosting the world’s most important beer festival every September/October: Oktoberfest.
Outside this period, it’s a trendy area, with many fashionable bars, clubs, and upscale restaurants.
It’s thus the district to stay in Munich if you want to party!
You’ll like this area:

Attractions in the Ludwigsvorstadt area:

In Au-Haidhausen District
Au-Haidhausen district is located east of Munich’s center.
Separated from the old town by the Isar River, you just need to cross the bridge to reach the center in less than 10 minutes.
This is a rather calm and residential area with a lot of charm, you will really feel more like being in a small town rather than in a big city.
There, you will also find plenty of small independent shops and cafes.
Au-Haidhausen is one of the most pleasant places to stay in Munich.
This district is ideal for accommodation in Munich:
