Chora, the Capital of Naxos
Chora is the main town to stay in Naxos island.
This is where you’ll arrive with the ferry, whether coming from Athens or another Greek island.
It boasts a very long seafront promenade lined with restaurants, cafes, and shops overlooking the harbor.
You can start your stroll in Chora by admiring the island’s must-see attraction, the famous Portara. It’s located at the far end of the promenade, on the islet of Palatia.
The Portara, or “The Gate,” is actually all that remains of the Temple of Apollo built in the 6th century BC that was never completed. The site also offers a lovely view of Chora town and the surrounding area.
Next, you can head to the Kastro district, the oldest part of the town, passing through the alleys of the Old Market. Typical of the Cyclades with their cobblestone streets and white and blue houses, the place is really charming.
In the district, you’ll also see several Venetian mansions and remains of the castle.
Chora is the most convenient place to stay in Naxos, especially if you don’t have a car, as the buses depart from there.
You should stay in this village:
- For its picturesque atmosphere
- To dine in the best restaurants on the island
- To enjoy the nightlife
- For shopping
- For a romantic getaway
- To easily explore the island.

Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna, Next to the Most Famous Beaches
Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are the two sandy beaches situated just south of Chora.
You will find many hotels in this area, private beaches, and taverns, where you can enjoy a drink or a meal with a sea view.
If you want to be walking distance from the beach, Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are an excellent choice for your stay in Naxos.
I also recommend them for a family holiday, as the water is shallow and the area is sheltered from the wind.

The farther away you get from Chora, the more secluded and less crowded the beaches will become.
