In the City of Rhodes
The city of Rhodes is located at the northern tip of the island.
It’s divided into 2 parts:
- The medieval city, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Within the walls, the area is entirely pedestrian, allowing you to stroll leisurely through the cobbled streets and explore the historical buildings.
- The more modern part of the city, called Mandraki, also featuring a few beautiful buildings.
The city of Rhodes, particularly the medieval city, is very touristic. So, you will find restaurants, souvenir shops, and clothing boutiques everywhere!
The city is the ideal place to stay in Rhodes:
- If you’re looking for a very lively area
- For shopping
- To immerse yourself in history and culture by visiting the island’s main historical sites
- If you don’t have a car and want to explore the island by bus or on organized day trips
Here are the best places to visit in the city of Rhodes:
- The Palace of the Grand Masters: one of the first buildings built by the knights
- The Street of the Knights, where inns were reserved for knights based on their country. Here you can see the Inn of France or the Inn of England for example.
- The Archaeological Museum, located in the former hospital of the knights
- The Clock Tower
- The Byzantine Museum, with its frescoes and icons from the Byzantine period
- Suleiman Mosque, built during the Turkish conquest of the island.
- The port, where the famous Colossus of Rhodes once stood at over 30 meters high, completely destroyed by an earthquake in 226.
- The Acropolis of Rhodes
- Beautiful buildings from when the Italians occupied the island, like the Bank of Greece, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Town Hall, and the National Theatre.
