As the name suggests, the Central Business District (CBD) is downtown Sydney.
It’s a cultural, commercial, and financial hub with large modern buildings along the bay.
Vibrant and bustling at all hours, the district boasts numerous shops, malls, and plenty of restaurants.
If you’re looking for where to stay in Sydney’s center, this is the perfect spot as you can easily get around using public transportation or walking to the city’s other must-visit neighborhoods during your stay.

- Sir Stamford Circular Quay: 5-star hotel a 5-minute walk from the famous Sydney Opera House. Not the most modern hotel, but the location is unbeatable. Price per night from $190, breakfast $24. Strong points: Views of the Botanic Gardens, swimming pool, gym.
- Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park: Luxury hotel in front of Hyde Park, St. Mary’s Cathedral and 5 minutes from Sydney Eye Tower. Modern and sober rooms with excellent bedding. Price per night from 250$, breakfast for 33$. Strong points: Absolutely central location, 24-hour gym, indoor pool. My favorite hotel for a luxury getaway in the center of Sydney!
In The Rocks district
The Rocks is the historic district to stay in Sydney.
Surrounded by skyscrapers, it actually occupies only a small part of the Central Business District, right opposite the Sydney Opera House.
Formerly a sailors’ quarter and one of the first settlements, it has retained all its authenticity with its 19th-century buildings full of charm and perfectly restored.
For me, it’s one of the best areas to stay in Sydney for its pleasant atmosphere, resembling a small village in a large city.
You’ll find plenty of small shops and boutiques there.
This area is ideal for accommodation in Sydney:

- To immerse yourself in Sydney’s history
- If you’re looking for a traditional neighborhood
- For walking around and enjoying the magnificent view of the opera house.
In The Rocks district, you can visit:

- The Rocks Discovery Museum: a free museum about the history of the district
- The Circular Quay: a beautiful pedestrian promenade with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge

- Cadman’s Cottage: the oldest house in Sydney, built in 1816.

- Four Seasons Hotel Sydney: The perfect choice between The Rocks and downtown Sydney, it is a stone’s throw from Circular Quay and the Royal Botanic Garden. Elegant, quiet rooms. Starting from 270$ per night, breakfast at 37 $. Strong points: Prime location, spa, fitness center and a delicious restaurant. An excellent choice for a romantic stay in the center of Sydney!
- Park Hyatt Sydney: If you’re looking for a luxurious and carefree stay, this 5-star hotel is all you need. Located 5 minutes from Circular Quay, it has a privileged view of the Sydney Opera House. In Darling Harbour district
Darling Harbour is located to the west of the Central Business District and also runs along Sydney Bay.
It’s a rather upscale neighborhood bustling with numerous high-end restaurants and trendy bars.
It’s also where you’ll find some of the city’s most beautiful luxury hotels.
You’ll love this area:
- If you have a certain budget
- If you want to indulge in excellent restaurants and hotels
- For a family stay as there are plenty of attractions that your children will enjoy

- Sydney Aquarium: home to 13,000 animals, it’s one of the largest aquariums in the world
- Madame Tussauds Museum and its lifelike wax figures of celebrities
- The Australian National Maritime Museum, about the maritime history of Australia. It houses a submarine, a destroyer, and other ships.
- WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo where you can meet kangaroos, wombats, and koalas
- King Street Wharf: a hot spot with plenty of terrace restaurants along the bay
- Chinese Garden of Friendship built to symbolize the friendship between Sydney and the city of Guangzhou in China.

Surry Hills is located to the South of Sydney’s city center.
It’s the district of hipsters and artists, home to numerous art galleries, independent boutiques, and festivals.
It’s also one of the best districts for going out at night, to have a drink and enjoy live music.

Bondi Beach is the most famous beach in Sydney, but it’s a bit out of the way. This means you’ll need to use public transport every time you want to go somewhere else.
But if you love surfing and strolls along seaside trails, it can be a good option for you.
