In Altstadt (1st District)
Altstadt district is Zurich’s old town.
Divided in two by the Limmat River, it’s the most touristic area of the city.
Here you will find Zurich’s main monuments, as well as numerous shops and restaurants.
For me, Altstadt is the best neighborhood for a stay in Zurich!
I recommend this district:
- If you’re looking for a lively place
- If you have a certain budget, as it’s one of the most expensive districts for accommodation in Zurich
- Because it’s an excellent starting point to explore the city on foot
The neighborhood is ideal for discovering:
- Grossmünster: the cathedral with its two large towers, the emblem of the city!
- Sechseläutenplatz: Zurich’s main square
- Fraumünster: another beautiful church known for its stained glass windows by Marc Chagall
- Swiss National Museum, which traces the history of Switzerland
- Zurich Opera House
- Bahnhofstrasse: the city’s main shopping street.
Here’s my selection of the best hotels in Zurich’s historic center
- Best Western Plus Hotel Zurcherhof: Just a 5-minute walk from the station, right in the city center. You can get quite spacious and well-equipped double rooms starting at 250€, breakfast included. Strong points: the charming staff, private parking, and perfect location for sightseeing. This is an excellent choice for your stay in Zurich’s old town.
- Motel One Zurich: Located a 5-minute walk from the cathedral. Modern and comfortable double rooms starting at 280€, with breakfast for 20€. Strong points: great location, comfort, and quality breakfast.
- Hotel Scheuble: Situated in the heart of Zurich. Double rooms with warm decor starting at 340€, breakfast for 24€. Strong points: delicious breakfast, excellent location, private parking. Another great option in Zurich’s city center!
- Storchen Zurich – Lifestyle Boutique Hotel: This 5-star hotel is located right by the Limmat River and offers tastefully decorated rooms starting at 680€, breakfast for 36€. Strong points: exceptional location, room views, rooftop access, and tranquility. This is my recommendation for a romantic stay in Zurich!
- Baur au Lac: Set in a private park by Lake Zurich, this luxury establishment welcomes you to sumptuous rooms elegantly decorated starting from 1000€, breakfast for 53€. Strong points: excellent service, starred restaurant, professional staff. Definitely one of Zurich’s most prestigious hotels for a dream night!
In Enge and Wollishofen (2nd district)
Enge and Wollishofen districts are located on the left bank of Lake Zurich, just South of the old town.
These are primarily residential areas, but are very lively with quite a few places to see.
These neighborhoods are ideal for your stay in Zurich:
- If you want to stay in a fairly central area
- For a family trip to Zurich
- To enjoy nature and beautiful walks by the water.
Not to be missed in Enge and Wollishofen:
- Rietberg Museum, renowned for its collection from Asia, Africa, and America, located in a stunning park.
- Seebad Enge, swimming pools set up for swimming in the lake during summer and as saunas in winter.
- FIFA Museum, dedicated to football
- Lindt & Sprungli Chocolate Shop, for stocking up on delicious Swiss chocolates!
- Rote Fabrik, a cultural center hosting concerts and theater performances.
- Enge train station
Where to Stay in Enge and Wollishofen Districts, Zurich?
- Meininger Hotel Zurich Greencity: Located a 10-minute walk from Rote Fabrik. Industrial design double rooms from €150, breakfast at €17. Strong points: next to the train station for easy access to the old town, welcoming staff, comfortable beds. This is a great deal for your stay in Zurich!
- Glärnischhof by TRINITY: Situated right next to the bridge leading to the historic center and the shopping district. Warm and comfortable double rooms starting at €210, breakfast included. Strong points: the location, large rooms, the quietness.
- Alden Suite Hotel Splügenschloss Zurich: Located 50 meters from the lake, this 5-star hotel offers very spacious suites starting at €400, breakfast at €46. Strong points: the Spa bathtub, the huge bathroom, the quality of the bedding.
- B2 Hotel Zürich: Located a 15-minute walk from the lake and city center. Elegant double rooms from €460, breakfast included. Strong points: the stunning library with 33,000 books, the superb rooftop pool with views over the city, the Spa, very quiet. An excellent place to stay in Zurich for a weekend!
- Park Hyatt Zurich – City Center Luxury: A luxury hotel located just steps from the lake and the old town. Guestrooms feature wooden furniture, large bay windows, and marble bathrooms starting at €900, breakfast at €52. Strong points: the excellent breakfast, the design, the restaurant. My favorite hotel for a luxury stay in Enge (Zurich)!

In Langstrasse District (4th District)
Langstrasse is located to the Northwest of the old town.
With its numerous trendy clubs, cocktail bars, and pubs, it’s the perfect neighborhood to stay in Zurich if you want to party!
Among the legendary bars in Zurich, you should check out the Olé Olé Bar or Kon-Tiki.
And if you feel like dancing, head to Longstreet or club Zukunft!

Where to Stay in Langstrasse, Zurich?
- Guesthouse fürDich: Located 150 meters from Langstrasse street. Spacious double room with refined decor starting from 160€, breakfast for 17€. Strong points: well-appointed, cleanliness, bed comfort. It’s a great place to stay in Langstrasse!
- Trip Inn Zurich Hotel: Just a few steps from Langstrasse. Modern double room starting from 170€, breakfast for 20€. Strong points: friendly service, close to everything, comfortable.
- Boutique Hotel Josef: Located next to the train station and the Swiss National Museum. Double room with very comfortable bedding starting from 250€. Strong points: excellent location, quietness, the hotel bar is very nice.
- 25hours Hotel Langstrasse: Located at the corner of the train station and Langstrasse street. Beautiful room with warm decor starting from 280€, breakfast for 38€. Strong points: design, excellent restaurant and brunch-style breakfast. Another great choice in Langstrasse district!
In Zurich West District (5th District)
Zurich West, a former industrial district, is the city’s new trendy area.
There, you will find many nice shops and art galleries.
This district is ideal for your stay in Zurich:
- For shopping
- If you are an art enthusiast.
Must-see in the Zurich West district:
- Prime Tower: a 36-story skyscraper offering a view of the entire city from the bar on the 35th floor.
- Im Viadukt: the arches of the railway viaduct now house a variety of small shops, restaurants, and a covered market.
- Freitag Tower, a tower consisting of 19 stacked shipping containers with the first four floors housing the store for the famous Zurich bag brand “Freitag.” You can also climb to the top to access the rooftop and its view of the district.
The Best Hotels to Stay in Zurich West District
- Ibis Zurich City West: A classic Ibis chain hotel offering double rooms starting from €190, with breakfast at €19. Strong points: close to public transport, pleasant staff, comfortable bed.
- 25hours Hotel Zürich West: Located within a few minutes’ walk from the Prime Tower. Modernly furnished and tastefully decorated double rooms start at €225, with breakfast at €34. Strong points: underground parking, next to the tram taking you to the city center in 10 minutes, the bar and restaurant, the excellent breakfast. This is one of the best choices for accommodation in Zurich West District!
- Züri by Fassbind: Situated in the heart of the West district. Spacious double rooms with large windows from €290, breakfast at €23. Strong points: welcoming staff, quietness, good restaurants nearby.
- Novotel Zurich City West: Located 300 meters from the Prime Tower. Large, cosy rooms with a sofa and desk starting at €300, breakfast at €33. Strong points: indoor pool, friendly staff, quiet location. This is the perfect hotel for a weekend in Zurich!
In the Hottingen District
The Hottingen district is located on a hill on the East bank of Lake Zurich.
Although quite off-center, you should consider it only if you want to spend a night in Zurich’s most iconic hotel: The Dolder Grand.
With an extraordinary view of the lake, the city, and even the Alps, this luxury hotel has hosted many famous personalities for over a century.
It boasts fantastic facilities such as a magnificent 4000 sqm Spa with indoor and outdoor pools, jacuzzi and sauna.
You can also dine in one of its award-winning restaurants, including “The Restaurant”, with 2 Michelin stars.
And if you want to easily reach the historic center, the hotel offers a free shuttle service or limousine service.

If you’re on a tighter budget, here is a selection of affordable accommodations in Zurich:

- Gasthaus zum Guten Glück: Located about a 25-minute walk from the center. Double room with shared bathroom from 110€. Strong points: cleanliness, friendly staff, nice neighborhood.

- Meininger Hotel Zurich Greencity: offering quad rooms from 234€ per night. It’s located in Wollishofen district. My favorite for its excellent value for money for a family stay!
- Ibis Zurich City West: located in Zurich West. It offers rooms for 3 to 4 people starting from 274€. I highly recommend this establishment for a family stay in Zurich.
- Trip Inn Zurich Hotel: in Langstrasse. Family room for 4 people from 300€ per night.
- Best Western Plus Hotel Zurcherhof: located in Zurich’s old town. Family room from 440€ per night. Another excellent choice for staying in Zurich with your family.

If you’re looking for the best hotel in Zurich, I can only recommend The Dolder Grand or for something more central, yet just as beautiful, Hotel Baur au Lac.
